these are just the best! As a mom of 4 kids, I can tell you that making
a little plaster cast of baby's tiny hand or foot is just about the
most bittersweet gift ever. I still have handprint of my 20 year
old from kindergarden, but it's just not the same as looking at his
newborn footprint on the back of his birth certificate.

And while an ink impression is nice, there's just nothing else that can
bring back a flood of memories more than an actual three dimensional
representation of your baby's hand or foot. You can hold it in your
hand, trace the tiny toes, feel the texture of the swirls of baby skin
on a teeny, tiny hand.

We've got a little kit all ready for baby's footprint or handprint.
Just pour water into the plaster, let the mixture set for just a bit,
then press baby's foot into the mold (from experience, I can say it's
best to wait until baby's asleep!), make a couple of holes in the top
with a straw, and presto--out pops a precious wall hanging that you'll
have forever.

We're offering our little baby footprint kit along with most of our personalized baby gifts; take a look at our Personalized Teddy Bear for more information.

I must have
one! (This coming from a woman who can never find her wallet, because
it's in the purse she used yesterday with the black outfit, and today
she's wearing pink...)

OK, I know I have more than enough bags, and it's just shameful to keep
adding to the collection, but these are just so cute, I can't help
myself. And, judging from our customers' responses and purchases, I'm
not the only purse-aholic out there...come on, ladies, 'fess up!

Here's our latest addition to the line of purses, backpacks, and
handbags we already carry. Smart pink, with white accents on the sides
of the webbing, longer handles, cute little pink and white polka dot
accent bow on the handle, and a little larger than the bags we've been
ordering.

Who knew a purse made from some old seatbelt could be so cute! Long on
strength and construction, short on price! If you don't like the
bow--take it off. If you don't like pink, take the one in black.

These handbags even have metal feet on the bottom--athough, with the
durability of seatbelt webbing, I don't really see why they need feet.
I especially like the little zip pocket on the inside; there's even a
pocket with elastic at the top so my cell phone doesn't fall into the
bottom of the bag.

All in all, there's just nothing to dislike about these seatbelt
purses. Great functionality, construction you just can't beat with
fabric that's practically indestructable, and a high cuteness factor!

our trip to Myrtle Beach, I realized just how pitiful I looked dragging
my beaten, old rolling suitcase into the lobby of a very nice hotel. I
love the gingham duffels we carry, so (naturally!) I had to test out
monogramming on one...and (naturally) I happened to use my own
monogram...

So here I go into the lobby, with my cute little gingham monogrammed
duffel bag ever so casually throw over my shoulder, with my matching monogrammed makeup bag loaded with my
latest Estee Lauder treasures, and dragging my ugly green canvas
rolling suitecase behind me...

I realized that I needed matching luggage...so...

Introducing our latest find; a gingham garment bag! I love that the
fabric is nylon but doesn't look like it, has cute little polka dot
bows, and is in classic black & white. It even has 2 zippered
pockets on the inside.

The next time we check in to some swanky place, I'll be
ready! I'd even be willing to pack a dress in that pretty garment
bag--who knows, I may even wear it!

We took a quick trip down to Myrtle Beach, S.C. last week for a few days. Bruce played in the 24th Annual National Retired Military Golf Classic, and I made several stops along the way for fabric and supplies. We had a blast!

Between hunting for various embroidery supplies and visiting local
fabric mills, I had the chance to race the kids along the beach, hunt
for shells, and spend a relaxing afternoon at the waterpark with
Michael and Leah.

The Sand Dunes Resort was just wonderful to us. Besides offering great
rates for the golfers, the amenities included good food in various
restaraunts inside the hotel, a small water park, indoor and outdoor
pools, sauna, whirlpools, fantantic views from our room on the 11th
floor, and courteous, professional staff. The only complaint I
have is that they didn't offer in-room wireless internet service (I
thought everyone did!).

Using bodies from meat and plant eaters, and combining them with just heads (where do kids come up with this stuff??), here's what they created.

A sample of the new "breeds" they hatched include:

    Stegarex
    Scelidotops
    Allodactyl
    Ornithoopteryx
    Postosaurus
    Styrachtoraptor

Seems the next step in the evolutionary process is a body with 6 tails....
In fact, the only fish I even remotely like
is my daughter's Beta called "Valentimes". And the only reason I
tolerate her is that she doesn't eat much, someone else changes her
water, and she doesn't make much noise.

But I keep reading that fish is high in protein and low in fat and
calories (what--there's no protein in chocolate?? But it's one of the
major food groups!!!), and it's supposed to be good for you.

SO...

I bought some fish called "Tilapia". I read the instructions on the back of the package, and mostly followed them. Needless to say--I did not like it. Not one little bit.

Being the tenacious one that I am, however, I bought it again. This time,
I tried something different. I loved it! My picky son loved it! My
husband told me "yeah, you could make this again" which is code for
"hey--you finally cooked something that my stomach didn't want to kick
back out!"

Here's my simple recipe for "non-kick-back" fish:

Pour about a teaspoon of lemon juice on a 4oz Tilapia fillet (I'm
guessing that this'll work on just about any kind of fish). Sprinkle
generously with Emeril's All Natural Bayou Blast seasoning. Broil for 6
minutes. Turn fillet over, and use lemon juice and Emeril's on the
other side. Broil for another 6 minutes.

You'll end up with a mouth watering, tender, flaky, low-cal, low-fat,
high-protein cajun-spiced fish that'll just knock your socks off! Ooooh
boy, is it good!! If you do veggies on the side, just dash a little of
Emeril's on those, too.

BAM!

We love pickleball! This is just about the best game ever; play if you're 8--play if you're 80!

Here we are, yours truly on the far left, Joyce (one of my
heroes) in the middle, and Alvin, who works for the city of Chesapeake.
He's of the great guys who helped organize our 2007 Super Pickleball
Challenge tournament at the Western Branch Community Center this past
April.

This game has long been dominated by seniors, but the "younger" crowd
(those of us who are forty and fifty-somethings) are rapidly infiltrating the game,
and giving those feisty seniors a run for their money. After all, this
isn't a game about strength, but shot placement and strategy. (Of
course, it helps if you can send those seniors chasing the ball all
around the court. I say, if you can't beat 'em--at least wear 'em out!)

Joyce, for example, (sorry, Joyce!!!) is almost 25 years older than I am. I work out almost daily, and push myself hard.
But playing Joyce in 3 games of singles almost had me cryin' for my
mama. She's a very aggressive player, using her overhead shot at the
net to shoot that ball right past me like a bullet, right along the
baseline and just out of my reach. And she never gives up.

Stay with us for more photos from the tournament. We're always on the prowl for more players; we'd love to welcome folks from anywhere in the Tidewater area.

Or we'll come to you.

But fair warning--we'll be bringing Joyce with us.

We Play Pickleball with Relish!

It's part indoor tennis, part badminton...it's a craze that's just
beginning to draw out the younger crowd, having appealed to feisty
seniors for several years...and it's called...

Pickleball! (I know, stupid name, but the game's great!)

A growing group of seniors, and now their younger counterparts, have
become enamoured with this game. It can be played indoors (my personal
favorite) or outdoors (the action's considerably slower). And it's easy
to learn, fun to play, and appeals to everyone from grade school kids
to folks in their 70's.

The rules are simple; you hit a sort of wiffleball with a racket larger
than a ping pong paddle, but smaller and lighter weight than a tennis
racket. Just bounce the ball over the net, and keep the volley
going!

More on this fantastic game soon!

How do you know,
especially when you place an order online and don't get to see and feel
the material, just how well this fabric will
hold up? After all, just about any material looks good straight from the
mill--but what happens after it gets used? And washed? And washed again?
Many baby things, especially layette items and receiving blankets, are
made of cotton. It's easy to see why; cotton is a natural fiber and has a soft hand (feels soft
to the touch). The problem with buying a cotton receiving blanket, and then having
it personalized, is that cotton shrinks. The embroidered area doesn't.

We've all bought lovely layette baby items, including embroidered blankets, bibs, and
onesies. Pretty, soft and sooo cute. Then baby wore them, and either baby
spit up (as babies do!), or Mom spilled a little bit of formula, or it's
just time to see how the next little outfit looks. Into the washer goes
baby's new cotton embroidered wrap. Into the dryer goes baby's pretty
new blanket. Out comes a shrunken cotton blanket with the embroidery
area badly puckered--and not a thing can be done. Which is precisely the
reason we chose Malden Mills micro fleece to make our personalized baby
		blankets.

Malden fleece has a hand as soft (or softer!) than cotton, is hypo-allergic,
(we recommend NEVER buying a cashmere baby blanket--sounds great, very
soft, a very elegant but impractical gift--soft it is, but it's still wool!)
washes wonderfully, comes in beautiful colors, and it manufactured in the U.S.
For all these reason, we chose Malden fleece over all the rest. One of the
biggest differences is what's called "pilling". Any material that is brushed
on the top to make it soft and fluffy, whether it's the world's best cotton,
		the world's best
cashmere, or the best world's fleece, will pill. The difference between
		Malden fleece
and all the rest is the amount you will see. We have yet to see a fleece
advertised as "non pilling" that doesn't--except Malden.

When it comes to satin, which actually refers to the weave and not the thread
content, we chose a polyester satin over nylon. It's more expensive, but
lasts longer. We've notice other companies have chosen to use nylon; cheaper
to buy but won't last as long or wear as well as polyester.

As for details; see if you can tell from a closeup photo if corners are
mitered (sewn at a 45 degree angle). It's harder to do and takes longer (a sign
of attention to detail). See if the satin binding is wide or the less
expensive narrow binding. See if the company you're looking at actually
tells you who manufactures the material. And, as a side note, as silky
as a blanket that is entirely made of satin feels--have you ever
		tried sleeping on satin sheets?
You slip and slide and lose your pillow and covers; imagine trying to hold a
little baby wrapped in something so slippery! What about the embroidery designs
a company offers? Are they just simple outlines, or detailed and
unique designs that will make a custom embroidered baby blanket that much more special?

How big is the blanket? Normally, a "crib blanket" is about 36" x 50".
A big blanket might be nice for a toddler, but it's hard to wrap a tiny
infant in such a large blanket, especially if the fabric is heavy, like
a double layer velour. You end up with all blanket and no baby! A
smaller, lightweight blanket might be much better, not to mention
easier to fold up and put in a diaper bag.

Lastly, and as a safety concern, I realize that blankets with cute little
looped "tags" are the rage, but when our oldest son was tiny, he put his
finger inside a loop (it happened to have care instructions written on it)
and twisted his blanket so many times in his sleep that his finger started
to turn blue and he woke up screaming. I highly discourage giving these
blankets to any child who isn't old enough to understand your
explanation of being careful about that loop.

One more thing; please never, never, never buy a blanket for a baby that has
buttons or bows sewn on. They each present a choking hazard to little ones.

Now maybe it'll be a bit easier for you to shop for your next personalized blanket,

such joy into my life, and how I thank my lucky stars every day that I
have them. Every day is Mother's Day in my house.

Now -- let's talk about Mother's Day gifts in my house...

I'm not big on gifts, myself -- I'd love them to wash my car, or maybe
unload the dishwasher without being asked, or pick some dandelions for
a centerpiece for the kitchen table (and while you're at it, how about
picking them at the roots?). I don't need gifts; I have 4 of the
world's best gifts right here.

Over the years, I've received such notable presents as a new clothes
hamper, a smoothie-maker, a paper shredder, and a carpet shampooer
thingy...heaven only know how much I just love appliances.

Last week, I was looking at some of the mail order catalogs that our
mailman throws at the front door, and a beautiful garden angel caught
my eye. I thought, well, shoot, I'll just order this pretty angel for
my flower bed, and ask the family to give it to me for Mother's Day. A
present they don't have to shop for, or one that I'll have to sneakily
return (I really don't need another weed whacker), and everyone'll be
happy.

But no...

The box with the angel arrived yesterday, and I left it behind the
front door. I mentioned to my husband, Bruce, that the box contains my
Mother's Day present, and that's it a really pretty angel for my flower
bed, and that he can pass it to the kids so it'll be a "surprise" for
me.

An overwhelming look of disappointment came over his face and he blurted
out, "but...but...we got you a brand new pressure washer! It's got red paint! And wheels! It's got the
new Project Pro Nozzle System Easy Start Pump! It's gas-powered and everything!"

"Can't you just return the gnome, or whatever it is?"

OK, I don't know about you, but the idea of a pressure washer just
didn't make my top 10 list, even if it does have all that horsepower.
(What? You mean I can drive it? Is it a convertible?). Fact is, it
didn't even make the top 100. Or 1,000.

Seems the boat has gotten so grimy that only a pressure washer can save
it from being hauled away by a hazmat team from the local National
Guard Armory. (And we all know just how much I love that stupid
boat..but that's a story in itself.)

And like a good mother, I'll love that pressure washer. I'll
proclaim it the best pressure washer I've ever had in my whole life. (It goes without
saying it's the only pressure washer I've ever seen, much less had.)

The absolute best Mother's Day gift ever.

Maybe next year...

Yet Another Plant!

One
of my favorite customers, a very sweet lady who's been ordering from us
since we opened, gave us a beautiful plant a few days ago. I don't even
know what it is, but it's very pretty (and we thank her very much!),
and in case she reads our blog--we just don't know how we've managed to
run the business without another plant!

OK -- if you've been reading us so far, you've probably seen our
article
about Lily & Fred, our pretty peace lily and her life partner, a
Chinese bamboo plant. For years, Lily wilted and just wasn't happy. She
stubbornly refused to bloom until Fred came into her life. And now, it
seems, Fred might just have some competition for Lily's affections.

We've decided to call the new guy (?!) Sven. He's sort of spiky and
blondish-green, in a Nordic sort of way. He's a bit on the quiet side,
and his foliage is accented by a very nice seashell and this greyish,
kind of mossy thing.

We'll keep you up to date on this trio. Oh, and by the way -- Lily's getting ready to bloom again!
More on the barn swallows...

Most of the distant relatives have taken the hint and moved on, but one
(or two) families have decided to stick it out; and it appears they've
won the battle.

There is just no way they could have built a nest on the front
porch--with all those bottles and cans covering every square inch, it's
impossible for them to have built a nest. Why then, do we still have
several birds roosting on what little flat space is left between the
cans of baked beans every night? Why are they still here? Why won't they leave? And why do I hear those familiar cheep-cheeping sounds all day long?

I'll tell you why. Because there's a nest here. I just haven't found it yet.

It's not on the porch. It's not in the wire pink flamingo with the fake
tulips in it. It's not on top of the light fixture. It's not above the
door.

Then where in the world is it???

Slowly, I walk out front and stand at the curb--a good 75' from the
front porch. I watch them fly around the house, through the columns; at
least 4 of them. They screech only a little bit--seeing as I'm standing
outside what they must perceive as their danger zone, they don't really
bother me. And I see them swooping down, carrying what I can only
surmise are big ol, fat delicious worms from my flower bed...

Then they land above the porch and disappear.

Into the gutter.

Darn birds...They have determinedly built at least one nest inside the gutter.

Now it would seem to me that a gutter wouldn't be the safest place to
raise a family--all that rain and stuff gushing around. Did the smart birds go
elsewhere and leave the not-too-bright relatives behind? I'm guessing these guys weren't college material.

I can only imagine my horror if tiny little baby birds come swooshing
out the bottom of the downspout during the next big rain. Either that,
or the calla lilies I planted just below the nest will be flattened by
the torrents of water that will surely gush over the top of the gutter.
Either prospect doesn't make me the least bit happy.

These little swallows may have won this battle, but they haven't won the war!

Well...at least, not yet...

the barn swallows who prefer my front porch over anywhere else on
earth, this year have got to go!

We've had barn swallows nest at the top of the doric columns across my
front porch for the last several years. Last year, after having been
swooped down upon one time too many, I decided it was time for the
little guys to move elsewhere.

The last batch of quintuplets born on my porch wouldn't leave. And I mean they
wouldn't leave. The were no longer cute miniature versions of their
parents, with downey little feathers around their middles and sweet
little peep peeps coming forth from their tiny little beaks. They were
full grown adults--and the entire family of seven moved in with no
intention of ever leaving. After all, they had it made--rent
free, nice quiet neighborhood, clean birdbath within walking distance.
And mostly during the day, they didn't really bother anyone...well,
anyone that didn't come within 50 feet of the porch, anyway.

The first year, it was sweet. We took pictures. We bragged to all our
friends, and since no one else seemed to have a nest of cute little
baby birds on their front porch, we became the envy of the
neighborhood. Even the mailman, who didn't really mind the
screaming, swooping little guys hardly even said a word. Just threw
mail and the front door and ran. We were the only house who didn't
receive uninvited door-bell-ringers offering great discounts on Popular
Mechanics.

The next year it wasn't quite so cute. It took forever to clean the
porch, and we had to replace the white wicker rocking chair that I
loved so much. But that was OK; after all, this was what the Great
Circle of Life was all about. Family. There's just nothing more
important.

Again, we took pictures; we oohed and aahed at the babies. We let the
weeding go around the porch, since it seemed to bother the birds. We
started pricing yet another wicker rocking chair. And the mailman asked
us to pick up our mail at the post office.

The barn swallows came back the following spring. Only this time, they
brought friends. And distant relatives. They held the largest barn
swallow family reunion in generations.

They built nests on the tops of the columns. They built nests in my
beautiful, expensive hanging flower baskets. They built a nest inside
the wreath on the front door. The front porch was filled with
chattering--all day long. At night, I'd see pair after pair of little
beady eyes staring at me through my dining room window. One of those
birds would turn his head and look at me through just one eye.
Four and five birds per column, all sitting crammed side-by-side,
staring at me. Not moving. Just staring. I swear I saw one raise his
eyebrow.

I'd creep over to the next room and surreptitiously peer through the
curtain...they were all staring at me again. OK, now it's weirding me
out. I believe I've had enough. The front porch will never be clean again, the neighbors have politely mentioned that the weeds have obscured their view of the street, and no one dares to walk up and knock on the front door. Those barn swallows have got to go.

I would never dream of harming an animal, and the birds were no
exception. So the question was, how do I discourage them from coming
back to their own little paradise without hurting them?

We tried hanging wind chimes. No luck; they build a nest on top. We
tried putting rubber snakes on the tops of the columns. The birds used
bits of them to make their nests. We tried covering the flat spots with
crumpled up aluminum foil; the birds flung the foil at my windows in
disgust, mocking me. We tried moth balls. The birds simply rolled
them off onto the porch floor. (Well, at least, there are no
moths out there.) We put a large stuffed owl outside to scare them
away. They'd snuggle up next to it.

This year, we're changing our tactics. On one post, we poured
sand into a plastic mayo jar and wedged it into the space between the
top of the column and the porch roof. (HA! Trying rolling that off!)

Another column has 6 full cans of Ginger Ale. Another column has 4 28
ounce cans of Boston Recipe baked beans (I love those beans!). Another
spot has 6 plastics bottles of Lipton Diet Green Tea with Citrus and
Natural Flavors. After we ran out of soda, we used tall cans of Miller
Lite stacked up on the rest of the flat spots.

It looks like a small convenience store out there.

And boy, are those birds mad.

They screech and holler all day long, swooping all around the front
porch, windows and door, between the columns, madder than I thought any
bird could be. At night, at least 6 still roost jammed between the
cans, holding onto the edge of the column with their little toes,
staring at me with those beady little eyes through the window. I can
hear music from "The Twilight Zone" softly in the distance.

One couple tried to stuff a nest in the 2 inch space between the top of
the mayo jar and the porch ceiling. It was still empty, so we cleaned
it out and stuffed foil in the space. We took down the wreath on the
front door. We dumped the birdbath.

Yeah--we'll see who wins this one!

We've found the coolest dinosaur toys ever for our budding paleontologist -- Dino Magic!

He just turned 6 years old, and Michael can grab one of his books on
dinosaurs, open a browser to Google Video, and type in the name of his
favorite dino to watch a video. He has a collection to rival the Museum
of Natural History, and can point out all the flaws in the hit movie,
Jurassic Park. He loves anything to do with
dinosaurs.

A few weeks ago, my daughter told me about a toy called "Dino Magic",
that involves tossing an egg into warm water, watching it fizz, and
waiting for a dino to hatch.

We bought one -- and now the whole family is hooked. We bought out 2
local toy stores and have been hatching dinos nightly in the kitchen.

Really--if you have a child who loves dinosaurs as much as mine, you've
just got to try Dino Magic. But don't bother buying the Volcano, since
a glass bowl works just as well, and the kids can watch the dino hatch
through the glass.

(Oh, by the way, a Brontosaurus was a long necked, giant plant eater,
and Archaeopteryx was meat eater with claws, sharp teeth and feathers.)
The cutest mint green ever, trimmed in our favorite pink--just waiting

We just love this color! The duffel is
just the right size to tote just about anything, from pj's to dolls to

pillow. Made using the finest fleece milled in the U.S. by Malden Mills
of Massachusetts, and surrounded in shiny satin, this lovely keepsake
personalized baby gift just can't be found anywhere else. That's
because we handcraft these beautiful keepsake baby pillows right here
in our Virginia studio.

We'll complete this gorgeous gift with an embroidered design of your
choice, along with up to as many as 40 characters (more, if you wish!).

We'll send it, along with a gift card if you'd like, anywhere in the
continental U.S. or Canada, including APO and FPO so your gift will
arrive on time.

Coordinate one of these baby pillows with a matching personalized
blanket (yes, we handcraft them too!) for a most unique baby gift--one
the little one's family will surely remember. See these and more at
